Travel books, postcards, adventure movies, and the Paramount Pictures logo are all depicted in Ed Ruscha’s Spied Upon Scene series of paintings (begun in 2017). Their lineage includes an obscure American painter from the turn of the 20th century, Louis Michel Eilshemius, whose use of painted frames greatly influenced Ruscha’s approach.
