Mark Grotjahn: Dancing Black Butterflies
In the mid 1990s, Mark Grotjahn began work on a stream of densely worked pencil drawings and subsequent oil paintings in Los Angeles—which focused on techniques used since the Renaissance to create the illusion of depth and volume on a two-dimensional surface. This book documents the drawing Untitled (Dancing Black Butterflies) (2005–2007) that was created in nine parts. Nature and culture merge in the Butterfly drawings, which resemble abstract, rainbow-hued butterfly wings and call to mind the butterfly effect introduced in the 1960s.
