About the Collection

SUPERVSN X THE BROAD JUNETEENTH CAPSULE
About the Collection
Takashi Murakami composes a universe where smiling flowers, skull constellations, and the mercurial figure of Mr. DOB share a single immaculate plane. Rooted in Edo-period printmaking and nihonga, filtered through anime and manga, his Superflat approach collapses depth into crisp line and saturated color, so the image reads instantly and reveals more the longer you look. Pattern becomes pulse, repetition becomes rhythm, and surface becomes the stage where joy and unease sit side by side.
Across these prints, floral fields chorus with delight while skulls quietly mark time, and Mr. DOB’s looping refrains hint at language, branding, and the way images circulate through contemporary life. The work is playful and philosophical at once, inviting pleasure at first glance and reflection on impermanence, desire, and devotion on the second.
See This Merciless World (2016), My Face in the Field of Flower (2022), and And Then (A Deep Ocean of Ultramarine) (2013) together with further highlights from Murakami’s limited edition prints. The selection is currently available in store and online The Shop at The Broad.
