This book marked the opening of LACMA’s new three-story contemporary art building in 2008, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. Written by Lynn Zelevansky, the Curator of Contemporary Art, it tells the fascinating history of contemporary art at LACMA and celebrates this significant moment in art history. Accompanying Zelevansky’s 26,000-word essay are signature works from the collection, along with numerous historical and documentary photographs. The foreword by LACMA’s Director, Michael Govan, discusses the enrichment of the museum’s contemporary holdings by Eli and Edythe Broad. Four Los Angeles artists—Anthony Hernandez, Sharon Lockhart, The Center for Land Use Interpretation, and Uta Barth—were also commissioned to provide a complementary photography project included in the book.
